  • Matt Loy

Professor Matt Loy began his Jiu Jitsu journey while attending Penn State University, where he was a four-year member of the varsity lacrosse team. After graduation, looking for a new challenge beyond lacrosse, he discovered mixed martial arts at Titan Fitness in State College, PA, and quickly became fascinated by this “new thing called Jiu Jitsu.”

After college, Matt trained in both Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Advanced BJJ in South Brunswick, NJ, earning his Blue Belt under Professor Brian Katz. In 2012, he moved to Hoboken and met Professor David Branch at The Edge School of Wrestling, continuing his training under Branch and eventually earning his Brown Belt.

In 2016, Professor Branch opened his academy in Hoboken and invited Matt to begin teaching, an experience that sparked Matt’s passion for instruction. Matt earned his Black Belt in 2019 after 10 years of consistent training. Since then, Matt has been a dedicated coach at David Branch Jiu Jitsu, helping students develop both skill and confidence on the mat. Now based in northern New Jersey, Matt is proud to help own, operate, and launch the second David Branch Jiu Jitsu location in Montville.

Passionate about teaching and continuous learning, Matt believes in helping others grow through Jiu Jitsu while remaining a lifelong student of the art.
